Independent Counsel or Cumis Counsel is a lawyer who represents only the policyholder and has not attorney-client nor business relationship with the insurer. The word “Cumis” refers to the name of a court case describing the right to independent counsel. Independent counsel’s counterpart is dependent counsel.
